Parents are naturally going to be worried about leaving their kids with a new babysitter in Bangkok for the first time, and so will the children themselves. After all, none of you know what to expect, and you can’t be sure that the kids and the babysitter will actually get along.
But a new babysitter doesn’t have to be a scary experience, so long as you make a few preparations beforehand and let your kids and the babysitter know what’s to be expected.
1. Warn your kids first
Always tell your kids ahead of time that they’re going to be left with a new babysitter. It’s best not to inform them too early though as that could give them time to get nervous. Instead, tell them a few hours before about their new babysitter, and try to get them excited about having a new friend to play with.
2. Help to put your child in control
One great way to make your child feel more comfortable is by giving them some responsibility. Tell them they need to show the new babysitter around the house, where to find things etc. This will give your child a degree of “control” and help them to relax.
3. Get the kids involved
Children might be nervous or anxious about having a babysitter. You can help them with this by explaining that the situation is also new for the sitter too. Tell your child it’s natural to be nervous and that it’s also okay. You can also help by asking your child for ideas on how to make the new babysitter more comfortable. For example, your child can ask the babysitter what they like to do for fun, or what they like to eat.
4. Check the babysitter’s references
Parents should make every effort to ensure the new babysitter can be trusted, especially if it’s someone they don’t know. Be sure to ask for and also check references and ensure you’re leaving your kids in the hands of someone that can be trusted.
5. Set up a spy cam
For added peace of mind, you can install security cameras in the house to monitor the babysitter with your child while you’re out. There are many affordable home security cameras these days that can be linked to your phone, allowing you to monitor from afar 24/7.
6. Lay some ground rules
You’ll want to ensure the babysitter can be trusted, but at the same time you’ll want to know your child will also behave themselves. For this reason it’s a good idea to lay some ground rules and go over these with your child and the babysitter together. For example, the bedtime routine should remain unchanged, no late nights, no fighting with siblings, when and where homework should be done, the consequences of bad behavior etc.
7. Ensure the babysitter knows what’s expected of them
The babysitter should have a clear idea of their job. They’re there to care for and play with your children, so that means no excessive playing on their phone, watching TV or having friends over. They’re there to supervise your children, and that’s what they must pay attention to.
8. Plan something to do
It’s always a good idea to plan some activities so the kids won’t be bored. Prepare some games or an art project for them to do together. You can discuss ideas with the babysitter too.
9. Reassure your children
Don’t forget to reassure your kids before you leave. If they’re old enough, remind them that they can always pick up the phone and call you, but tell them they should only do so if it’s important. And don’t forget to let the kids know what time you’re coming home.
10. Remind your kids they can tell you anything
Your kids should already know this, but remind them that it applies to the sitter, too. For example if they don’t like the new sitter, tell them to tell you. Or if the sitter shouts too much or asks them to keep a secret from you, they must let you know.
If your child doesn’t like the babysitter or doesn’t feel comfortable with them, you know not to use that babysitter ever again.
